Does your iPhone or iPad often run out of battery and you have to charge it frequently? Well, if you use apps that draw a lot of power for a long time, it’s quite likely that the battery will drain out pretty soon.

There are some iPhone and iPad settings which can be tweaked to reduce unnecessary power consumption.

These also prove useful in giving your iDevice that extra bit of juice when you are traveling.

So, here are the five best tips to maximize the battery life of your iPhone or iPad.

Download the latest version of iOS

What do you do when you get iOS update notifications on your iPhone or iPad? If you choose to ignore them, you could well be losing out on some battery optimization tweaks introduced by Apple. Download and install the latest release of iOS and also update iTunes. Here’s what you need to do. If your device has iOS 5 or later, updation can be done wirelessly. Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘General’ > ‘Software Update’. If an update is available, tap ‘Download’. Install the update after it is downloaded.  In case, you’ve a version previous to iOS 5, connect your iPhone to a computer. In iTunes, select ‘iPhone’ under ‘Devices’. In the Summary pane, click ‘Check for Updates’ and download the new software if available. Also, keep updating the iPad and iPhone apps regularly.

Set auto-brightness

The iPhone and iPad have high resolution screens which can deplete the battery quickly depending on the brightness level. The best way to conserve the charge is to set auto-brightness. This adjusts the screen brightness according to the ambient lighting conditions. Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Brightness & Wallpaper’ and enable the ‘Auto-Brightness’ option. The brightness level can also be lowered by dragging the slider to the left.

Disable push notifications

There are several applications that send you alerts by using the Apple Push Notification service. The notifications can drain the battery of your iPhone or iPad. To turn them off, tap ‘Settings’ followed by ‘Notifications’. Now choose the apps for which you want to disable the push notifications. Just open the apps and you will get all your alerts there. So, you won’t miss anything.

Stop background apps and geo-location services

Some of the applications keep running in the background even when you close them. If these apps use geo-location services such as GPS, the battery life will be adversely affected. Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Privacy’ > ‘Location Services’ and turn off location services for individual apps. Another useful tip is to shut down the background apps. Double tap the Home button to display the multitasking bar and close the apps that you are presently not using.

Optimize data updation settings

If email clients and other apps are set to refresh the data automatically, increase the time interval between the updates. To do this, go to ‘Settings’ from the Home screen. Tap ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’, followed by ‘Fetch New Data’ and then tap the ‘Hourly’ option. This will help you to conserve the battery life of your iPhone or iPad. You can also choose to update the data manually from these settings.
